After more than three years of absence, Rita returns to her hometown, somewhere in the Italian provinces. Now in her late twenties, suffering from bouts of depression and sleeplessness, unable to finish her doctoral thesis and incapable of communicating with other people, she desperately yearns to recover the joie de vivre of her carefree youth, when she was surrounded by family and friends -- and time seemed to stand still.
But have things really remained unchanged in this small town? And is Rita actually willing to put up with her parents' idiosyncrasies and her brother's nagging habits, reingage in another round of endless fights with her ex-boyfriend, go through complicated courting procedures with more or less desirable males, contend with jealousies and conspiracies and gosssip from friends and foes, meet the same faces and have the same superficial conversations in the same cafés day after day?
Torn between memories of adolescence, her present gloomy situation and an absolute dread of the future, Rita struggles to find out if there is such a thing as a cosy place for her in this world.
